Reiki is the energy of life—the pure essence of vitality. We all have access to this energy—it is the guiding and organizing force of life within us—and when we cultivate ways of being that support and nourish the free flow of this energy in our bodies, we can radiate our pure essence from inside out, bringing harmony and peace to our daily lives.
While Reiki is a hands-on, energy healing technique, it also is a philosophy. The founder of Reiki, Master Mikao Usui, believed that the effectiveness of Reiki healing depended on the recipient’s ability to live by certain daily principles in order to hold and support the energy of the treatment.
These principles are:
- Just for now, I will not worry.
- Just for now, I will not be angry.
- Just for now, I will be grateful.
- Just for now, I will do my work honestly.
- Just for now, I will be kind to every living thing.
While simplistic, when we put these principles into practice, we are building the power and fortitude of our core vitality and essence, which is so often frayed and worn down when we worry, get mad, take life for granted, forget kindness and don’t live in our integrity.
That’s not to say our goal is some sort of emotional nirvana, where we never feel negative or “shadow” emotions. These more difficult emotions are essential teachers on our healing path, and they are often orbiting around long-term habits of thought and patterns of feeling that perpetuate our personal suffering and harm our pure life force. It is only by giving our negative experiences and feelings compassionate attention and awareness in the moment they arise that we can begin to heal the old grievances and pain at their core.
As you navigate your days, you will experience a range of feeling and emotion. If you can acknowledge when you are angry or worrying, or just not feeling good, it is an opportunity to bring yourself back into harmony simply by witnessing your own experience, without identifying or attaching too much to it, or using it as a way to judge or criticize yourself, and then return to the now—just for now, I am at peace; just for now, I am love. Just for now, I radiate my pure essence.
As you develop this practice in your life, and incorporate these principles, you are naturally generating and attracting higher vibrational energy that supports creativity, flow, abundance and interconnection. Good energy is cumulative in this way—the more we nourish our inner and outer environments with peace and compassion, the more love and bounty we will find in the unfolding of our days.
