Diastasis Recti / Diastasis Rectus Abdominis
Diastasis recti (also known as abdominal separation) is a separation of the rectus abdominis muscles that occurs as the connective tissue between the muscles thins and stretches. This condition can occur during pregnancy and remain in the post-partum period, when the abdominal muscles return and remain separated, leading to complications such as back pain and pelvic organ prolapse.
You may notice a bulge between your abdominal muscles when doing a sit up movement. The belly bulges due to the space between your left and right abdominal muscles and weakness of the deeper abdominal muscles.
If you are experiencing this condition:
You may be at higher risk of injuries when returning to your normal activities.
You can more easily aggravate existing back and pelvic girdle pain.
You might feel self-conscious about the visual aspect of bulging in your abdomen.
If left untreated:
Diastasis recti decreases the integrity of the abdominal wall strength that serves to protect your organs. It also predisposes a person to:
- Lower back pain
- Pelvic instability
